More about the Swedish National Skills teamThe Swedish National Skills Competition (Yrkes-SM) is a powerful demonstration of where skills can take you and the importance of skills and vocational professions as a whole; both today and tomorrow.
The competition is also to highlight the appeal of a vocational profession, increase the interest in vocational education and training (TVET) and to raise the status of vocational professions. The event introduces the kids, parents and teachers to different career path that a vocational education can offer.
Local businesses, vocational boards, actors in the field, sponsors and others work together to inspire young people and show them the benefits of a vocational education: career opportunities, the needs of the market and the pride and fun a vocation can bring.
The Swedish National Skills Competition was first held in 2004 and has grown a lot since then.
Even back then attending the Swedish National Skills Competition was a highly instructive process and a part of the competition that is always evolving.
When combined with teacher mentoring and preparatory material, such as videos, career exploration and follow-up sessions, a visit to the competition allows the students to learn about the labour market and their potential education and career choices on a much deeper and complex level.
